How to Prep Shoes for Painting: Step-by-Step with KixKote

Prep is the foundation of a flawless, durable finish. Follow this material-aware process to clean, deglaze, mask, and ready your sneakers for KixKote paint.

What You’ll Need

  • KixKote Cleaner & Prep – preferred solution for removing coatings and oils
  • Acetone (optional) – stronger alternative for heavy factory finishes or stubborn contaminants
  • Microfiber cloths (lint-free)
  • Cotton swabs or soft detailing brushes (seams & edges)
  • Masking tape (vinyl-safe/low tack)
  • Non-marring scuff pad (vinyl/glossy panels only)
  • Gloves (prevent skin oils from re-contaminating)

Note: Acetone can prep tough finishes quickly but may over-dry or lighten some leathers. For everyday work, KixKote Cleaner & Prep is the safer, more controlled option.

Identify Your Material

Leather

  • Smooth or slightly pebbled; natural grain visible.
  • Matte look after deglaze; takes paint evenly.

Fabric / Canvas / Mesh

  • Woven/knit texture; highly absorbent.
  • No deglaze required; focus on clean & masking.

Vinyl / Synthetic / Patent

  • Uniform, plastic-like surface; often glossy.
  • Benefits from light scuff + thorough deglaze.

Step-by-Step Prep Process

Dry Clean & Dust Off

Remove loose dirt with a dry brush or microfiber. Pay attention to seams, perforations, and lace areas.

Deglaze / Deep Clean (Leather & Vinyl)

  1. Dampen a clean cloth with KixKote Cleaner & Prep or acetone (for stubborn coatings only).
  2. Rub in small circles until the sheen dulls to a uniform matte.
  3. Use cotton swabs for seams and tight edges.
  4. Allow 10–15 minutes to dry fully.

Pro Tip: Acetone works fast — use sparingly, keep the cloth only slightly damp (not soaked), and test first. On soft or dyed leathers, Cleaner & Prep is the safer choice.

Light Scuff (Vinyl/Patent Only)

On slick synthetics, gently scuff with a non-marring pad to create micro-tooth. Wipe again with Cleaner & Prep (or a quick acetone pass) to remove dust.

Mask Precisely

  • Cover midsoles, logos, windows, and liners with low-tack tape.
  • Burnish tape edges for crisp paint lines; protect interiors with paper.

Avoid: High-tack tapes on delicate leathers.

Final Wipe & Dry

Give a light final wipe with a nearly dry Cleaner & Prep or acetone cloth. Let fully evaporate. Do not touch with bare hands afterward.

Ready for Paint

  • Surface should be clean, matte, and dust-free.
  • For painting: mix 5% KixKote Crosslinker into your paint by volume for maximum bond and flex.
  • Apply thin coats (spray preferred for OEM finish), allowing proper flash/cure between coats.

Note: Crosslinked mixtures have a working pot life (typically 4–6 hours). Mix only what you’ll use the same session.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Painting over oils, wax, or factory coatings.
  • Overusing acetone (soaking the surface or scrubbing too aggressively) — it can over-dry or lighten leather.
  • Touching cleaned panels with bare hands before painting.
  • Skipping full dry/flash time before the first coat.
  • Applying heavy first coats that reduce flexibility.

FAQ

What should I use to deglaze leather before painting?

Use KixKote Cleaner & Prep for most jobs. For heavy factory finishes or stubborn contaminants, acetone can be used sparingly — always test first.

Do I need an adhesion promoter?

Not typically. With proper deglaze and by mixing 5% Crosslinker into your paint, KixKote bonds strongly — even on vinyl. Our latest kits do not include a separate adhesion promoter.

How long after prep can I start painting?

Once Cleaner & Prep or acetone has fully evaporated (about 10–15 minutes) and the surface is matte and dry, you can begin painting.

Is acetone safe for all leathers?

Use with caution. Acetone can over-dry or lighten soft or dyed leathers. Start with KixKote Cleaner & Prep and only use acetone if needed, on a small test spot first.

Always test products on a hidden area first. Follow all safety and ventilation guidelines. Crosslinked mixtures should be used within 4–6 hours.
