How to Seal & Protect Painted Shoes (Using KixKote Finisher)
You’ve prepped, painted, and cured — now it’s time to protect your masterpiece. KixKote Finisher is the final topcoat in the system, designed to seal, enhance, and protect every custom shoe project.
Why Finishing Matters
Even the best paint job can fail without proper sealing. KixKote Finisher creates a flexible urethane topcoat that locks in pigment, prevents scuffs, and improves water and UV resistance. Available in Matte, Satin, and Gloss — or intermix them to create your own custom sheen.
- Protects against scratches, cracking, and fading
- Adds adjustable sheen from stealth matte to high gloss
- Maintains flexibility so your finish bends like OEM
💡 Pro Tip: Even if you want a dead-flat look, one light coat of Finisher adds invisible protection without changing the color.
What You’ll Need
- KixKote Finisher (Matte, Satin, or Gloss — intermixable)
- KixKote Crosslinker (5% by volume)
- Mixing cup and stir stick
- Airbrush or soft brush
- Gloves and respirator
- Lint-free/tack cloth
Before sealing: Allow your painted shoes to air dry for at least 24 hours. Ensure the surface is clean, dust-free, and fully cured for best results.
Mixing KixKote Finisher
- Shake or stir the Finisher bottle thoroughly.
- Pour out only what you’ll use within 4–6 hours.
- Add 5% Crosslinker by volume and mix gently for 1–2 minutes.
- Let sit for 2–3 minutes to release bubbles before applying.
• Matte + Gloss = Satin-like finish
• 2 parts Matte + 1 part Gloss = Soft Satin
• 1:1 Matte & Gloss = Balanced Satin
• 1:1 Satin & Gloss = High Satin / Low Gloss
How to Apply Finisher
Airbrush Method (Recommended)
- Nozzle: 0.3–0.5mm
- Pressure: 20–25 PSI
- Hold 6–8 inches away
- Apply 2–3 light coats with 10–15 min flash between
Light passes prevent runs or cloudiness. Always keep airflow moving.
Brush Method
- Use a soft synthetic brush
- Apply thin, even coats in one direction
- Don’t overwork — once it tacks, stop brushing
⚠️ Avoid heavy coats; they can streak or trap moisture.
Drying & Curing
- Air dry for 24 hours minimum before wearing
- Optional: heat-set lightly with dryer or heat gun (6–8 inches away) for 5–10 minutes
- Full cure: 72 hours for full hardness and flex
Avoid moisture and bending during curing for a perfect film.
Common Issues & Fixes
| Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudy or hazy finish | Too heavy coats or high humidity | Spray lighter; allow longer flash between coats |
| Uneven sheen | Poor mixing or inconsistent coat thickness | Remix and apply an additional light coat evenly |
| Cracking or peeling | No Crosslinker or improper prep | Always add 5% Crosslinker; ensure clean, dry surface |
| Sticky or tacky surface | Not fully cured or environment too cold | Allow full 72-hour cure; heat-assist if needed |
