Artist Story
Michael Middlen didn’t set out to become a sneaker artist—he was just trying to get his hands on the pairs everyone else was chasing. After missing out on drop after drop, he found sneaker customization while searching online and had a simple thought: If I can’t buy them, I’ll make them. He started by customizing three pairs for himself. Then he posted them. The response was immediate—and that’s when Kicks n Canvas began.
Now, about a year and a half into his journey, Michael has built a reputation for clean, intentional, airbrush-driven customs that look factory-finished with no hint of paint. His work is known for smooth ombré transitions, buttery fades, crisp color control, and graphic concepts that turn each shoe into a wearable statement. He’s meticulous about precision—especially when it comes to logos, exact colors, and any detail that needs to land perfectly. Every project is commissioned, and every pair is a true 1-of-1.
One of his standout projects came through The Sioux Empire United Way during their rebrand. Michael created a fully custom pair based on a 79-page brand presentation—an assignment that demanded planning, restraint, and execution within strict guidelines. With many creative elements off-limits, the challenge wasn’t just making something bold—it was making something cohesive, expressive, and brand-accurate without overstepping the boundaries. That project pushed his design process to a new level and became one of the most rewarding builds of his career.
Michael’s proudest work often lives at the intersection of creativity and community. He’s partnered with local nonprofits and frequently donates customs to support causes he cares about. The Hungry Hearts project marked his first time using KixKote paint and gave him the chance to paint on suede while helping kids in need. He’s also created shoes for Emily’s Hope, supporting education and recovery around substance use, and for Unlost United, helping families locate missing loved ones. And his nonprofit collaborations continue to grow—including an upcoming project with Special Olympics South Dakota for their 2026 Summer Games.
Beyond painting, Michael also sews and cuts his own leather materials for customization, and he takes on select restoration and refresh projects when they fit the vision. While he does offer cleaning and restoration, creation is what drives him—and he’s just as passionate about sharing what he’s learned. He enjoys teaching because when others level up, it raises the entire craft. Long-term, he plans to offer coaching to help other artists build their skills using KixKote.
Michael’s customs typically take about three weeks from finalized design to finished pair in hand, depending on complexity. He’s currently booked 8–12 weeks out, and the best way to reach him is through direct message on Instagram (@kicks_n_canvas) or on Facebook (Michael Middlen), including his business page, Kicks n Canvas by Michael Middlen.
For Michael, partnering with KixKote was about finally removing the limits that held his creativity back. From the beginning, he wanted to create customs that last the life of the shoe—but standard acrylics kept forcing compromises. He found himself designing around what the paint could do instead of what he wanted to create. With KixKote, that changed. The paint looks and feels like it becomes part of the material, works across different surfaces, and lets him execute his ideas without sacrificing quality, durability, or finish. That freedom has expanded what’s possible in his work—and it shows in every pair he creates.
